Aphia Salisbury Rich was the daughter of Edward S. and Adah Crowell Salisbury of Western (now Warren), New York. In 1816, she married Gaius Barrett Rich [1790-1861] and the couple spent their early years together in Attica New York where Gaius was a postmaster and merchant, and later (1838) established the Bank of Attica. They had seven children; a portrait of Aphia with her year-old son Edward [b. 1832] was painted by Milton W. Hopkins, and is now in the NGA. Aphia had strong ties with the North Presbyterian Church. Her husband was active in the anti-Masonic movement and renounced Freemasonry in 1831. The family moved in 1842 to Buffalo, where Rich continued in the banking business.
