Staats, H.H.

Biography

Staats was possibly a descendant of the Van Vechten family, early Dutch settlers in the American colonies. An inscription on the painting reverse reads, "H.H. Staats, Pokeepsie." Staats owned a portrait (now in the NGA) of a male Van Vechten, painted in 1719 by an anonymous American artist now known as the Schuyler Limner.
