Biography

R.H. Staats may have been a descendant of the Van Vechten family, early Dutch settlers in the American colonies. The verso of a portrait of a male Van Vechten which Staats owned is inscribed, "H.H. Staats, Pokeepsie." The painting (now in the NGA) was executed in 1719 by an American artist now known as the Schuyler Limner. R.H may have been Richard H. Staats, an artists listed in New York directories.
