Wilcox, Philo Franklin, Mr. and Mrs.

American

Biography

Philo F. Wilcox was born in East Berlin, Connecticut. He came to Springfield in 1823, joining his older brother in the stove business, and in 1826 he married Orpha T. Wood (daughter of Asa). Of their known children, Ellen M. married Stephen Cadwell, and a four-month-old infant named Francis died in 1838. The Wilcoxes commissioned a portrait in early 1845 of two other children, Francis Edward and Mary Elizabeth, by the painter Joseph Whiting Stock [1815-1855]. Both small children were in fact deceased before the work was executed, having died within eleven days of each other in December 1844. The portrait (now in the NGA) descended by inheritance through the family until 1953. Springfield, Massachusetts directories list Philo in 1847 as the Director of Chicopee Bank on Main Street. In 1851, his occupation was given as President of Springfield Mutual Fire Insurance Co.
