Ozias Shelton Eells was the son of Reverend Ozias Eells [1755-1813] Phebe [née Ely] Eells [1760-1829]. On the occassion of his marriage in 1828, his mother gave him a portrait (now in the NGA) of his ancestor, Samuel Eells [1640-1709], painted by an unknown American "naive" artist. The picture was probably copied around 1800 from the earlier original. In 1882 Ozias Eells (then eighty-eight years old) gave it to the Reverend William Woodward Eells; the two were not related, but the latter was active in compiling the Eells family history.
