Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity, Hamilton College

Biography

The Hamilton College chapter of Alpha Delta Phi was founded by a member of the Eells family (probably Samuel Eells, son of the Rev. James Eells). In 1886, Rev. William Woodward Eells bequeathed to the fraternity a portrait of Samuel Eells [1640-1709] by an unknown American "naive" painter. The picture (now in the NGA) is probably a copy, painted c. 1800, of the original 17th century portrait.
