Hannah Eells Palmer was born 6 December 1804 in Stonington, Connecticut. On 15 February 1824 she married her cousin Paul Smith Palmer (11 November 1796 - 1875), the son of Revolutionary War general Roswell Saltonstall Palmer and his wife, Desire. Hannah Palmer then moved to her new husband's home in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Around 1835/38, they commissioned two portraits from the painter Erastus Salisbury Field, one of Mr. Palmer and the other of Mrs. Palmer with her twins, Charles and Emma. The twins died in 1838 at the age of three. The couple had nine children altogether, of whom only three survived to adulthood. Hannah died 13 March 1881.
