Biography
Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg and King of Hanover, 1st Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, Knight of the Orders of the Garter and St. Patrick, Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and the Hanoverian Order, Field Marshal in the Army, was born June 5, 1771. He was created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, in the Peerage of Great Britain, and Earl of Armagh, in the Peerage of Ireland, April 24, 1779, and succeeded to the Crown of Hanover on the death of his brother William IV, 20 June, 1837. Augustus married Princess Frederica Sophia Charlotte Alexandrina at Neustrelitz, May 29, 1815, and in London, August 29, 1815. Princess Frederica was the widow of (1) Prince Frederick Louis Charles of Prussia, and (2) Prince Frederick William of Solms-Braunfels, and 3rd daughter of Charles Louis Frederick, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; she died on June 29, 1841. Ernest Augustus died on November 18, 1851, leaving an only child, George V. (Taken from Burke's Peerage, see below.)
