Sattler, Wilhelm

German, born before 1822

Wilhelm Sattler purchased Castle Mainberg in 1822 from the Bavarian government. His son Jens enlarged Mainberg, which housed the Sattler's collection of art objects. Among the collection was a sixteenth-century wooden bust by Tilman Riemenschneider, supposedly of Saint Burchard (the first bishop of Würzburg), which they may have acquired from a church for which it was made. The bust is now in the NGA. After Jens' death in 1901 an auction of Schloss Mainberg was held in Berlin.

Kunstschätze aus Schloss Mainberg [Sattler Collection]. Auction cat. Rudolf Lepke's Kunst-Auction-Haus, Berlin, 29 October - 2 November 1901.
