The image shows the upper body of a woman sitting on a raised surface, facing left. She is holding a book and appears to be engaged with it. Her hair is styled in an updo with a hat or headpiece. She wears a black skirt, a white blouse with puffy sleeves, and a black shawl. Some sketchy outlines of other figures are around her: a child with a small parasol on the left and two indistinct figures on the right. The background is sparse with a light brown wash, hinting at an outdoor setting.
