Scholarly Remarks and Key Set Data
Remarks
On 19 February 1924 Stieglitz wrote to J. Dudley Johnston: “My own self-portrait was made 17 years ago” (Royal Photographic Society, Bath, England). This indicates a date of 1907, but he appears older here than in other portraits from 1907 (see Self-Portrait, Key Set number 322 and Heinrich Kühn, Alfred Stieglitz, 1907, National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1999.76.1). The composition, soft focus, and type of photographic and mounting materials are similar to those of other dated works from 1911.
