Scholarly Remarks and Key Set Data

Remarks

This photograph and Key Set numbers 1358 and 1359 were made after the New York Trust Company Building (in front of the Squibb Building) was completed in late 1930. In early 1931 construction began on the Hotel and Industrial Mart at 515 Madison Avenue (across 53rd Street to the north of An American Place), which would block Stieglitz’s view of the Hotel Weylin. Based on a comparison to Key Set numbers 1320, 1321, and 1322, which show approximately the same view and were taken in May or June of 1930, this photograph and Key Set numbers 1358 and 1359 were probably made in November or December 1930 or early in 1931.
