Scholarly Remarks and Key Set Data
Remarks
On 23 October 1930, The New York Times, 50, reported that the American flag (visible in both Key Set numbers 1351 and 1352), “was unfurled yesterday at the highest point of the new Waldorf-Astoria Hotel when the topmost column of the structure was put into place . . . the entire steel work, including erection and riveting will not be completed until early November.” The last capstone was put into place on 4 February 1931 (The New York Times [5 February 1931], 39). Therefore Stieglitz probably made this photograph and Key Set numbers 1351, 1352, 1353, and 1354 in November or December 1930.
