This black and white portrait shows the upper half of a person's body in a close-up view. The person is positioned slightly angled away from the camera, with their head turned to the side, looking straight at the camera. The individual has a serious expression, with defined features including sharp eyes, a small nose, and an intense gaze. They are wearing a dark, textured hat fitting snuggly on their head. Their clothing consists of a dark coat over a polka-dotted garment which is visible at the collar. No jewelry is visible, and they are not holding any objects. The background features an urban landscape, with the blurred outlines of tall buildings visible through a window.

Remarks

Stieglitz made this photograph at An American Place some time after the summer of 1930 when the Hotel Pierre (faintly visible in the background) was completed. It was probably intended for use as a publicity photograph for O’Keeffe’s January–February 1931 or December 1931–January 1932 exhibition at An American Place.
