Details
Overview: The exhibition of contemporary South African paintings, drawings, and sculpture, sponsored by the government of the Union of South Africa, was selected by the Union Department of Education in collaboration with the South African Association of Arts. After considering more than 1,000 works, the South African selection committee chose 145 pictures and sculptures by 43 painters and 10 sculptors, made since 1900. Also included were 19 pictures of "early" South African topics, dating from about 1850 to 1902, and the work of one native African Bantu artist. The exhibition was installed by Charles Seymour Jr., acting chief curator.
