American Impressionist Painting

Details

Overview: 73 paintings by 20 American impressionist artists who studied in France beginning in the late 1880s were chosen by Moussa M. Domit, with the assistance of William P. Campbell, curator of American painting. Advisors were John I.H. Baur and Lloyd Goodrich of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Organization: The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery in cooperation with the Whitney Museum and the North Carolina Museum of Art. The installation, designed by William J. Williams of the education department, included potted palms, dark wall colors, tufted circular sofas, and paintings hung in two tiers to recall turn-of-the-century taste.
