Overview: This exhibition of 29 paintings by American artist Frederic Remington explored the artist's experiments in painting darkness illuminated by moonlight, candlelight, and firelight. It was the first to focus exclusively on the artist's night scenes of the American frontier. The works were borrowed from public and private collections.
A public symposium, The Art of Darkness: Frederic Remington's Nocturnes, was held on April 20.
Organization: The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa. Nancy K. Anderson, associate curator of American and British paintings, was the curator.
Sponsor: The exhibition was sponsored by Target Stores.
