Margaret MacDonald is the director of the Whistler Paintings Project as well as the author or co-author of the print and online catalogue raisonnés of Whistler’s paintings, drawings, pastels and watercolors, etchings, and correspondence edition. She has co-curated various exhibitions including Whistler & Holland (1997), Whistler (1994–1995), Whistler, Women and Fashion (2003), Whistler & Russia (2006), An American in London: Whistler and the Thames (2013–2014). MacDonald has worked on the many projects focused on Whistler and has written books such as James McNeill Whistler: Drawings, Pastels & Watercolours (1995) and Palaces in the Night: Whistler in Venice (2001), among others. She is the editor and primary author of The Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan and James McNeill Whistler (2020), published by Yale University Press and National Gallery of Art, Washington DC (2020). She is the co-curator of exhibition, The Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan and James McNeill Whistler (2022) in collaboration with Ann Dumas, curator at the Royal Academy of Arts and consultant curator of European art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Charles Brock, associate curator of American and British paintings at the National Gallery of Art.
