Scholars and collectors rediscovered Desiderio da Settignano in the second half of the 19th century during the great revival of interest in Florentine sculpture of the Quattrocento. Today, however, his name is not widely known by the general public. This catalog accompanied the first-ever exhibition devoted to his work and offers a broad and varied overview of Desiderio’s art. Works in the catalog listed as by Desiderio are those traditionally and widely accepted as his, leaving the authors of the essays free to discuss objections or changes of attribution. In many cases, the sculptures have undergone restoration or cleaning, offering a clearer idea of the artist’s intentions. The catalog seeks not only to share the beauty and strength of Desiderio’s art, but to deepen our understanding and analysis of the relationships between these qualities in his work.
