A.I. Brings John Singer Sargent’s Painting “Spanish Roma Dancer” to Life

We can only imagine what it must have been like to experience the many sights, sounds, and colors that inspired John Singer Sargent’s legendary art. But now, A.I. technology can bring those sensations to life. The dashed brush strokes of the fringed shawls in Sargent’s painting, Spanish Roma Dancer, have a spontaneous quality, suggesting the immediacy of a live performance. Reacting to this painting Cristiana Grigore, founder of the Roma People’s Project, wrote, “I hope we can get to a point where we can be inspired by the long tradition of Roma music and dance, but also to make space for our people as writers, educators, leaders, and practitioners of a variety of professions so that a Roma child can proudly say, ‘I can be an artist or whatever else I want to be!’ ” Sargent and Spain was on view in our West Building from October 2, 2022, through January 2, 2023.
