Brazilian Painter Dalton Paula on “Zeferina” and “João De Deus Nascimento”

Dalton Paula painted imagined portraits of Zeferina and João De Deus Nascimento, leaders of Brazilian slave rebellions whose faces have been lost to history. By creating images of these two heroes of the African diaspora, Paula gives them dignity and identity. The paintings were part of Afro-Atlantic Histories, which was on view at the National Gallery from April 10 to July 17, 2022.

Dalton Paula elaborou retratos imaginados de Zeferina e João de Deus Nascimento, líderes de rebeliões de escravos brasileiros cujos rostos foram perdidos para a história. Ao criar imagens desses dois heróis da diáspora africana, Paula proporciona a eles dignidade e identidade. Essas pinturas são parte das Histórias Afro-Atlânticas, em exposição na Galeria Nacional até 17 de julho de 2022.
