Art For the Nation

Art for the Nation introduces the National Gallery of Art as the enduring legacy of Andrew W. Mellon. Narrated by Gallery director Earl A. Powell III, this video provides a tour exploring some of the masterpieces in the collection and underlines the Gallery’s civic value to American society (6 mins.).

To commemorate the National Gallery of Art’s 75th anniversary, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the Gallery a historic challenge grant. We are indeed grateful for this opportunity to strengthen the Gallery’s work in several crucial areas—digital engagement, conservation, scholarship, and educational programming. We hope you will join this endeavor by making a special gift of your own, which will be matched by the Mellon Foundation. It would be an honor to include your contribution for this milestone occasion.

The Gallery’s founder Andrew W. Mellon envisioned a national art collection belonging to the American people. Created for the nation by a joint resolution of Congress in 1937, the National Gallery has been nourished by the steadfast support of an enlightened government and the generosity of visionary individuals. This unique partnership sustains the highest standards of excellence, establishing the Gallery as a lively and welcoming public space, as well as offering a haven for personal and private encounters with art. The Gallery changes the lives of millions of visitors, one person at a time.

We are grateful to all individuals, foundations, and corporations who help the Gallery fulfill its mission to acquire, exhibit, preserve, and interpret works of art. Private donors embody the spirit and sustain the legacy of Andrew W. Mellon.
