Recentis Romae ichnographia et hypsographia
1677
2 plates
Overall Dimensions: 67 x 86 cm
Etching and engraving
Collection of Fredrika and Paul Jacobs
Comprising two sheets, this map is titled in full Recentis Romae ichnographia et hypsographia sive planta et facies ad magnificentiam qua prioribus annis urbs ipsa directa exculta et decorata est. Like Jan van Vianen's map, this view of Rome is based on Falda's map of 1676. This digital manipulation gathers both plates, printed on separate sheets, in one image. The term "ichnographic" refers to maps on which all buildings and features appear perfectly perpendicular from a single, aerial viewpoint; "hypsographic," by contrast, concerns topographical relief as represented on a map.
