Flags II [trial proof]

Jasper Johns, Bill Goldston, Universal Limited Art Editions · 1967-1970 · color lithograph on wove paper [trial proof] ·  Accession ID  2006.136.31

This image features a large vertical rectangle with thin, uneven lines to create a weathered texture. It contains two skeletal figures with exaggerated ribcages, one positioned above the other within a casket-like shape. The abstract composition of the image hints at elements of an old, worn tombstone or coffin with a skeletal figure donning a small hat, while the lower portion features another skull encased in a similar setting. Surrounding this central figure are disorganized shapes, with jumbled letters on the left resembling an incomplete or fragmented letterpress and hand signs on the right that appear like an abstract representation of communication methods. At the bottom, two simplified stick figures stand off to the side.

The image shows irregular dark watercolor blotches forming an organic shape across the center of the canvas. Within this design, there are elements resembling the American flag pattern and a photographic element of a man seated with a contemplative posture. The blending of fluid lines and details suggests a connection between abstraction and realism in a unified piece.

This is a painting of a collage of four images on a textured background. The artwork consists of four photographs incorporated into the composition, each with varying levels of clarity and within uniquely shaped frames that appear to be formed from splashes of ink. The images include individuals posed in different settings, such as in casual clothing and within an indoor environment, as well as a domestic landscape with a tree and building in the background. The image is a composite artwork featuring various photographic elements. On the left side, there is a portrait of a woman with her upper body visible, positioned in a relaxed manner with her hand resting gently on her chin. Her hair is styled neatly, and she has distinct facial features, including expressive eyes and a subtle smile. She is wearing a light, long-sleeved top. Surrounding her image is a green, textured background that blends into the other elements. To the right, a collage of more faded black and white images shows several people in different poses, including close-up shots of smiling faces and a more distant view of a group embracing. On the far right, there is a smaller, separate photo of two adults, one holding a child, all dressed in light-colored clothing. The overall background of the image is a plain, neutral tone, providing a stark contrast that highlights the layered and faded photographic elements.

The image displays a blend of sweeping, dark curves and lines that overlap various forms, creating an abstract composition. Vague outlines in the form of curving shapes may resemble familiar objects like a vintage car with a visible grille and headlamps, alongside a figure that seems to lean against the side of the vehicle. Within another part of the image, the profile of a person appears as they look out a window similarly presented in a mixture of shadowy swirls and indistinct shapes. The composition is a combination of textures that evoke imagery akin to photographic collages.
