  • Created with dark brown lines on cream-white paper, a nude young woman standing before a tall piece of furniture takes up most of the height of this vertical drypoint print. The woman is turned slightly to our left so we only see her left arm, on our right. Her feet are together and one knee is bent, creating a gap between her legs. Her dark hair is short or pulled back, and the contours and shadows of her body are indicated with hatching around her breasts, shoulders, abdomen, and legs. Her features are irregular; for example, her long nose is angled to our right, counter to the rest of her features, and her right breast, on our left, points upward. Her large thighs seem out of proportion to her body. The piece of furniture behind her is a tall, shallow, closed secretary desk with the writing surface folded up. The desk and floor below are created with denser lines and crosshatching. Two finials at the top of the desk are roughly half-moon shapes, and they frame her head. The back wall is suggested by loosely spaced, horizontal, parallel lines. The artist incised his name in the upper left of the printed area, “Milton Avery.” Below the printed area, on the paper, he numbered the print “25/100” in the lower left and signed and dated the work in graphite in the lower right, “Milton Avery 1935.”
