  • A collection of office equipment, food, artist’s tools, and body parts are arranged across or embedded within black, carnation-pink, or nickel-gray zones in this stylized, surreal, horizontal painting. Near the bottom of the composition, the pink zone reaches from the left edge of the canvas about hallway across. There the partial strokes appear unfinished so the gray surface beneath is visible. From left to right, objects in this zone include a daisy-like flower in a glass bottle, a red mug, a paintbrush next to squirts of scarlet red, pink-shaded white, and black paint, and, in the gray zone to the right, a ruler. The black zone stretches beyond this, taking up the horizonal center of the composition. Objects from left to right in this zone include a sandwich, a watch, a bunch of three bananas, an open book, and the eyes, forehead, and hair of a person painted in pink and outlined in black. Near the center is a collection of three shoes with nails lining the soles on the ends of spindly legs poking out of the black zone. Above that are a triangular square, a clock, a pencil, another triangle, perhaps a tool, and what could be the upper part of a head with a white-outlined hand covering the face. A gold-colored desk lamp with a green shade pointing down from its curved neck is along the right edge of the canvas in the top right corner. In the gray zone in the top quarter of the composition, a person with pink-colored skin, red-framed and -lensed glasses, and black hair seems to float on their back as in a pool. A white square object may represent a canvas and a tangerine-orange semicircle is difficult to interpret. A few vivid green branches angle down over the floating person from the top left corner, and a sky-blue circle could be the moon in a gray sky. The artist signed the lower right corner, “Philip Guston.”

  • Two old-fashioned irons (for pressing clothes), books, two shoes, a nail, an ashtray full of cigarette butts, a burning cigarette, and what might be a paint palette are arranged on a pink surface in this stylized painting. Each object is outlined in black, gray, or white, and filled in with mostly flat blocks of black, brown, white, or shades of pink. We look down onto the table from an angle, and the bottom quarter is clear of objects. Set a bit back on the table, a stack of three books with the topmost one open is to our left next to the two shoes, which are laid soles-up in a line. One shoe overlaps the rectangular palette, which is streaked with red, black, orange, and green. The ashtray is along the right edge of the table, and the burning cigarette hangs off the edge nearby, a thin plume of smoke wafting upward. The stake or nail, the two irons, and a pink book with an open eye looking to our right are in a row along the back of the table. Another stake stands vertically, tip down, near the back right corner. A light bulb with a gold chain and a black square with a green pull-down curtain are to our left, along the top of the composition. The artist signed the work to the left of center along the bottom edge, “Philip Guston.”
