San Marcelli; (sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 22 April 1895, no. 18, as Dans les champs);[1] Carmantrand;[2] (Durand-Ruel et Cie., Paris), in 1907;[3] sold to Sarah Choate [Mrs. J. Montgomery] Sears, Boston; sold to (C.W. Kraushaar Art Galleries, New York); sold 1 April 1926 to Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York;[4] bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] Sale listed anonymously in catalogue, but identified as San Marcelli in the literature of this object.
[2] Robert Fernier, La Vie et l'oeuvre de Gustave Courbet, Geneva, 1978: no. 544, gives Carmantrand with no documentation.
[3] In a letter dated 14 June 1928, in NGA curatorial files, Mrs. Sears remembers purchasing the painting directly from Durand-Ruel approximately twenty years previously.
