Shown from the lap up, a woman with peach-colored skin sits leaning sideways against the back of a wooden chair with her head tilted to our left on her long neck in this vertical, stylized portrait. The painting is done mostly with areas of mottled color outlined in delicate black lines. The top of her head and her left elbow, on our right, are slightly cut off by the edges of the canvas. Her copper-red hair is parted in the middle and puffs down and around her hears. Her elongated oval face and delicate features are simply drawn. Pencil-thin, nearly straight, grayish eyebrows float above almond-shaped eyes entirely filled in with black. A faint gray line forms her elongated nose. Her small rose pink, pursed lips are slightly darker than the faint blush on her cheeks. Her jet-black, long-sleeved dress has a high waist and a wide, diaphanous gray collar at the rounded neckline. Her left elbow, on our right, drapes over the top of the spindles making up the back of the chair so her hand rests near the gray collar. Her other arm rests by her side. The background is a foggy swirl of sage green and elephant gray. Two faint, thin, parallel, horizontal gray lines that run across the background may suggest a baseboard.

A person sits at the side of a dappled dirt path that curls along the edge of a green hill and through towering trees in this loosely painted horizontal landscape. The person is painted with a few strokes of peach to represent a light-skinned person wearing a white shift and blue hat. The low hill slopes down to the right. Trees are loosely painted there in the ravine and along the far side of the path. The sky is pale periwinkle blue. The artist signed the lower left corner, “Henri-Matisse.”

Les Gorges du Loup

Henri Matisse · 1920/1925 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  1963.10.166

This painting shows a large dark green vase of round orange blooms, purple flowers similar to lilacs, and green foliage arranged together in the center. Two yellow-orange fruits are placed to the lower right, near what looks like a tan book or a stack of paper. They are surrounded by swirls of white and seem to rest on a brown surface. The background contains patches of tan and white, with more white swirls. The brushstrokes in the painting are thick and visible.

A geranium with vibrant pink blossoms sits in a terracotta pot on a ledge in front of two shelves in this stylized, vertical still life painting. The orange terracotta pot has patches of vivid spring green around its base. The rounded leaves of the plant and petals of the blossom are outlined in black and filled in with areas of parakeet and moss green for the leaves and pink for the petals. The pot sits on a bright, lavender-purple ledge, and two more shelves are stacked behind it. A single terracotta pot sits to our left behind the plant on the lower shelf, and four pots are lined up on the shelf above, cut off by the top edge of the canvas. Brushstrokes are visible throughout. A turquoise strip runs along the bottom edge of the composition, and the artist signed the lower right corner, “Henri Matisse.”

A dark-haired, disembodied head of a haloed man with pale, peach skin floats against a red and yellow background in this vertical portrait. The man’s hair seems to be flattened against his forehead, and extends beyond his head at the back in a way that suggests it may become a cap or hood. His face turns toward us, and he looks down to our left under arched eyebrows. He has a prominent hooked nose and a brushy mustache. Behind his head, the background is divided into a tomato-red zone for the top half and a golden yellow field below, separated by a thin, pine-green line. Two red and green apples hang from a branch near the upper right corner. The thin yellow halo floats over his head to the left of the branch. A pine-green, stylized, vine-like form curves up from the bottom edge of the panel and ends with flat, sunshine yellow, square shapes, perhaps abstracted flowers or fruit. A hand near the lower right holds one end of the vine like a cigarette between fingertips. The vine seems to turn into a serpent’s head beyond the man’s fingers. Numbers and letters are painted in green in the lower left: “1889” and “P Go.”

The artwork features geometric shapes and lines arranged in an abstract composition. Triangular and polygonal forms are interconnected, with sections filled with densely packed vertical lines. To the right, a large trapezoidal shape with fine parallel lines converges. Along the left, smaller shapes cluster together. Throughout the piece, floating angular forms distribute randomly.

This is a drawing of a police patrol vehicle with multiple occupants in a nighttime urban setting. The scene includes a crowded 'Police Patrol' truck with people clinging onto various parts of the vehicle. The image portrays a sense of chaos and movement, with a figure on the ground in the foreground. The background shows an urban street with lamp posts, a clock tower, and other structures, possibly under moonlight or street lighting, creating an atmospheric ambiance. The detailed etching lines and shading depict a lively city night or an event involving law enforcement.

The image is a portrait of a man's head and upper shoulders in a monochromatic style. His round face has shadows around his eyes, which are looking straight ahead. He has thick, slightly wavy hair styled away from his face and a well-groomed mustache. The background is plain and dark, contrasting with the lighter tones of the man's face. The artist's signature and the date, 1896, are found in the lower left corner.
