The sitter, Hippolyte Lavoignat [1813-1896], Paris; by inheritance to his family; Dr. George Viau [1855-1939], Paris, by 1908 until at least 1912;[1] probably sold to Wilhelm Hansen [1868-1936], Copenhagen.[2] Dikran Khan Kélékian [1868-1951], New York and Paris, by 1921; (his sale, American Art Association, New York, 30 January 1922, no. 50); purchased by (Ferargil Galleries, New York); by exchange to Albert E. Gallatin [1881-1952], New York;[3] on consignment 1927 with (M. Knoedler & Co., London, New York and Paris); sold 1927 to (C.W. Kraushaar Art Galleries, New York);[4] sold February 1927 to Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York; bequest 1963 to NGA.
