Artwork history & notes
Provenance
(Ehrich Galleries, New York).[1] (Sale, Silo, New York, 16 February 1929, no. 378);[2] Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York; bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] A photograph of the painting in NGA Photographic Archives bears an Ehrich Gallery collection stamp.
[2] This information was not included in the provenance published in the NGA systematic catalogue. An additional note on the history of the painting reads: "Picture was left about a year ago at Mr. M. J. Rougeron's, a picture exchange, to be disposed of. Mr. Rougeron could not or would not remember the name of the former owner." These details come from the Chester Dale collection records (on microfilm at the Archives of American Art), and were copied and added to the NGA curatorial files in 1998.
