Artwork history & notes
Provenance
Sold by the artist to (C. W. Kraushaar Art Galleries, New York), probably in 1914;[1] purchased 12 June 1924 by Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York;[2] bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] Photocopies of the sale records in the NGA curatorial files (originals in the Chester Dale papers, Archives of American Art, Washington, DC) indicate that Zuloaga sold the painting directly to Kraushaar. Zuloaga's records indicate that he sold the painting to a New York dealer in 1914 (Enrique Lafuente Ferrari, La Vida y el arte de Ignacio Zuloaga [Madrid, 1950]: 234, no. 393).
[2] Photocopies of sales records in the NGA curatorial files. Chester Dale discussed the purchase of this painting in his unpublished autobiography, 1959 revised typescript of his 1953 manuscript, page 7, Chester Dale papers, Box 1 of 15, Archives of American Art. Achita is shown hanging on the wall of Dale's New York apartment in a photograph reproduced in Helen Appleton Read, "The Chester Dale Collection," Vogue 75 (February 15, 1930): 80.
