fourth quarter 19th century

American 19th Century

Associated Names
This painting shows a grassy green plain covered with horses. The horses are a variety of sizes and colors, including black, brown, white, tan, and white with black spots. They roll on the ground, run across the grass, sit, or rear back on their hind legs. Below the center of the painting, there is a rider on a black horse who faces us. The rider has pale skin and a thick black mustache, and wears a black shirt, yellow pants, tall black boots, and a gray cowboy hat. Bushes with yellow flowers dot the grass, and there are pointed white mountains in the distance. The sky is light green-blue with white clouds and a bright sun near the top left corner.
