In the image, the viewer is looking down a city street. Closest to us, there is pavement and the staircase of a buildings with intricate wrought-iron railing on the left side. To the right, the buildings cast deep shadows onto the street. As the view extends further, the road leads to a square, lined by buildings on either side, with indistinct people near a fountain in the center. The horizon is defined by the row of buildings across the square, where the rooftops and chimneys are silhouetted against the sky. The sky above is mostly clear, with faint sketch marks indicating clouds or smoke. The color palette is monochromatic, using various shades of sepia and brown.
