Artist, Italian, 1901 - 1980

The sculpture depicts a simplified, abstract form of a human figure seated atop a horse. The figure is riding the horse without any saddle or reins, and both the rider and the horse are designed in a stylized minimalistic manner with elongated forms and smooth surfaces. The entire sculpture appears to be made of a dark metal, likely bronze, with a patinated surface, giving it a monochromatic brownish color that highlights its texture. The horse is standing on slender, elongated legs, and the rider's posture is upright. The sculpture is positioned on a rectangular base, which supports the composition. The backdrop is neutral.

Artwork history & notes

Provenance

(Pace Gallery, New York);[1] Mrs. Enid Annenberg Haupt, New York; gift 1977 to NGA.
[1] According to a memorandum of telephone call between J. Carter Brown and Mrs. Haupt (26 September 1977, copy in NGA curatorial files) regarding the provenances of works she was donating. However, an annotation on the same memorandum in NGA curatorial files seems to indicate that only a sculpture by Ernest Trova donated by Haupt (NGA 1977.47.12) was purchased from Pace Gallery.
