This painting features two distinct colorful shapes. At the bottom of the painting, occupying around a third of the total space, is a bright red rectangle. On top of it is a slightly larger dark green rectangle. The green rectangle is outlined by thin lines of red, and the edges between the two colors are soft and slightly blurred. Thick brushstrokes are visible within each color, creating slight variations in tone.

The image features various shapes and flowing lines layered on the canvas, creating depth and movement. It is an abstract composition with swirling forms and bold colors. The interwoven elements could resemble organic shapes or figures. The mix of circular and linear forms might suggest a complex machine or map sections. Contrasting hues like reds and grays create dynamism akin to a busy urban landscape.

Personage Two

Mark Rothko · 1946 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  1986.43.12

This painting depicts various shapes inside overlapping rectangles against a dark orange background. These shapes resemble human limbs and body parts, each contained in their own section. Shapes resembling eyes peek from a cloud-like formation near the top left, and below it are two horizontal rectangles containing long arms ending in hands. Below that are more compartments with a hand, feet, and long legs. On the right is a large rectangle which seems to contain elongated torsos. The body parts and containers are painted in shades of white, gray, dark orange, and red, with dark outlines.

Two candy apple-red, horizontal rectangles with soft, blurry edges sit one over the other, separated and surrounded by a thin border of carnation red in this nearly square abstract painting. The top rectangle takes up the top third of the composition and the larger rectangle is below.

This painting depicts a box-like space made of elongated rectangular shapes and occupied by two people and a bright red easel. The red easel is on the right, appearing to lean on one of the walls of the room, with the canvas facing the left. Behind the easel, across a square opening, is a large human figure wearing a dark blue suit over a white shirt and black tie. The person's face is the same gray shade as the wall behind them, and they appear to have short hair. One of their hands rests on the surface in front of them, and they are looking towards the left. On the left, a smaller person stands on the same surface, on the other side of the square opening. This person appears to have white skin and wear a peach-colored dress and a pale orange hat. They are looking towards the left, and the space in front of them is pale yellow. The other walls at the top, bottom, and right are painted in shades of beige and light brown.

Thru the Window

Mark Rothko · 1938/1939 · oil on gesso board ·  Accession ID  1986.56.653

This painting contains two horizontal sections. The upper section is black, and it takes up more than half of the painting, but slightly less than two-thirds. The lower section is a light grayish-blue color. The line between the sections is uneven, with some small amount of blurring between the colors. Thick brushstrokes are visible in both sections, creating slight variations in color. In the blue section, there are several places where white and light brown are visible through the blue, perhaps showing us the canvas beneath.

At first glance, this painting appears completely black. However, upon closer inspection, a slight variation in shade becomes visible; there is a black square surrounded by a border of dark purple. The square is slightly above center, creating a thicker section of purple below it.

This painting depicts large, indistinct, amorphous shapes with blurred edges in an abstract design. A dark rectangular block is at the bottom, with scattered irregular shapes above it. Near the top is another large dark shape, and it has two patches of vivid yellow green within it. The background is tan, with streaks of gray between the different shapes.
