Jenny Holzer

American, born 1950

Conceptual artist Jenny Holzer uses billboards, neon signs, and posters to communicate social and political critiques. Originally from Gallipolis, Ohio, Holzer completed her master of fine arts at Rhode Island School of Design in the late 1970s. She then moved to New York City and joined the Whitney Independent Study Program.

While there, Holzer created some of her first public artworks. One of her best-known works is Truisms, a series of political maxims listed in alphabetical order. Holzer first printed these on large sheets of white paper and pasted them around New York. Eventually, she began displaying the statements digitally at art institutions and in public places such as Times Square.

Holzer’s recent work includes the series Redaction Paintings. Here, the artist copied pages of declassified government documents released via the Freedom of Information Act.
