Gregory Corso grounded serious straightforward looking at me Boulder, Colorado, Jane Faigao's Patio, hot tub behind him. Teaching that summer, Naropa Institute's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, earlier in the day he'd taken psychedelic "Ecstasy" powder, July 29, 1985. "Empathy" would be more accurate name.

My aunt Edie Leegant (Uncle Max Frohman's sister), Santa Monica 1985, with her room mate Mollie, and granddaughter's photo in black sweater over her shoulder. "Max's sister Edie works, 17 years bookkeeper at Ginabelle's-" Kaddish. Now she's 82 years old & spry, walked me two miles to cousin Oscar's house after this photo was made.

Harry Smith exhausted 3 A.M. over Chinese take-out supper. Car had backed into him up on 12th Street corner Avenue A weeks earlier, compression-fractured his knee, so he stayed with me nine months in small room behind him he’d fixed with door-latch and lock. Old postcard of Manhattan Island on toilet door panel to his right. Ethnomusicologic archivist, film-maker, alchemist, he’d designed my new Collected Poems book cover, he’d been moved out of hotel room on 28’th Street, lived in Bowery shelters, was now homeless in New York! June 17, 1985.

Fine-bearded Ilya Kutik & his wife, center, at home with his circle of friends, philologists, translators, poets & philosophy teachers, Moscow December 16, 1985. Dostoevsky-eyed youth in striped sweater had gone absent without leave for the evening from the Army to meet me and ask after Neal Cassady, Kerouac's hero On the Road.
