This program of short films by noted Dutch photographer and filmmaker Johan van der Kueken offers two examples of intimate portraits of artists he admired, as well as one self-portrait about his life, family, and his own films and photography.

Big Ben: Ben Webster in Europe (1967, Dutch with English subtitles, 31 minutes) is a portrait of the iconic American saxophonist and friend of the filmmaker. A Filmmaker’s Holiday (1974, French and Dutch with English subtitles, 16mm, 39 minutes) is van der Kueken’s travelog of a trip to the south of France with his family that becomes a study of time and the cycle of life and death. Lucebert, Time and Farewell (1994, Dutch with Engllish subtitles, 52 minutes), is a tribute to one of the most influential poets in Dutch literature and visual art, Lucebert (1924–1994).

Join us after the screening for a discussion with film curator and past programmer of the Flaherty film seminar Richard Herskowitz, in person.
