Purchased 8 September 1887, probably from the artist, by (Durand-Ruel, Paris and New York).[1] purchased 23 March 1899 by Edward Fullerton Milliken [d. 1906], New York; (his sale, American Art Association, New York, 14 February 1902, no. 14, as Bordighiera); (Durand-Ruel, Paris and New York).[2] Edward C. [d. 1915] and Mary Griffin [1855-1937] Walker, Willistead Manor, Walkerville, Ontario, and Washington; bequest 4 May 1937 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.

The painting was given two stock numbers, 1190 and 1460, in Durand-Ruel's Paris branch (Stockbook 1884-1890); it was transferred to the company's New York branch in 1897, where it was stock number 1849.
