Recorded as from Baltimore. Descended in the family of the sitter to his aunt, Mrs. G. Ogden, Ogdensburg, New York, who owned it in 1846.[1] Purchased in 1949 by Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch; gift to NGA, 1953.

[1] This information is taken from a label on the reverse of the portrait which reads (the [/] represents a break to the next line): "Wm Henry Vining of / Dover Delaware. Done by Geo. Miller at his / Wax Works Studio 172 North / Street Baltimore Md 1821 [this date is in the same hand, but seems to have been added later with a different pen] / Property of his Aunt / Mrs. G. Ogden of Ogdens- / burg N.Y. 1846."
