Henri Fantin-Latour

Artist, French, 1836 - 1904

This painting shows a man's head and shoulders in a portrait. He is turned slightly to the left, looking out towards us. The left half of his face and torso are in shadow. On the right, we can see that he has pale skin, dark eyebrows, deep-set eyes, an upturned nose, and red lips in a neutral expression. His brown hair is tousled and mid-length, and he has a reddish-brown mustache and beard. He is wearing a light-colored, high-collared shirt with a dark tie. The background is black. The brushstrokes in the painting are thick and visible.
