Associated Names
Mark Rothko

Painter, American, born Russia (now Latvia), 1903 - 1970

At first glance, this painting appears completely black. However, upon closer inspection, a slight variation in shade becomes visible; there is a black square surrounded by a border of dark purple. The square is centered, creating equal sections of purple above and below it, with thinner sections on the left and right.
