Mark Rothko

Painter, American, born Russia (now Latvia), 1903 - 1970

Rectangular fields of pale burnt orange and sage green hover at the center of the composition against a muted mauve-purple background in this vertical abstract painting. The larger horizontal orange rectangle is stacked over the green, and they are separated by a narrow strip of the fuchsia background. The edges of the rectangles are soft and the fields of color are mottled. The green paint seems to have been applied over an area of fire orange, and the orange surfaces in some places, especially along the bottom edge of the green shape.
