Possibly a gift from the artist to Gérard's widow, Marguerite-François Mattei [d. 1 December 1848].[1] Private collection, Paris, c. 1990; (André Lemaire, Paris), by December 1990;[2] purchased with donated funds 4 March 1991 by NGA.
