The image shows two full-length figures standing facing each other. Both figures have halos. The figure on the left is holding an open book. They wear long, flowing robes with folds and patterns. The figures have serene expressions; one with shorter, curly hair, and the other with longer, wavy hair. Surrounding them is an ornate architectural design with decorative elements. At the top, a dove with outspread wings appears between them. Below the figures is a line of text on a strip of decorative pattern. The background is plain, with the focus on the figures and their surroundings.

Artwork history & notes

Provenance

Rudolf Gutmann [1880-1966], Vienna (Lugt 2770) [1]; purchased by Lessing J. Rosenwald [1891-1979], 1929; gift to NGA, 1943.
[1] Although Rudolph Gutmann’s collection was seized in 1938 and restituted to him almost in its entirety, this particular work does not seem to appear in the catalogue of the seized collection or among the seizure cards created for the Zentraldepot, Vienna. This print might have entered the market before 1938.
