Eight Lipsticks

1988

Wayne Thiebaud

Artist, American, 1920 - 2021

Crown Point Press

Publisher

We look slightly down onto eight cylindrical, metallic tubes of vibrantly colored lipsticks standing in two rows of four against a cream-colored background in this nearly square print. The caps are removed and the tips are irregularly worn down to points, rounded tips, or flat tops. There are two teal-blue lipsticks, two peachy-pink, one rose pink, two plum purple, and one canary yellow. The tubes are painted with vertical bands of buttercup yellow, denim blue, black, white, and scarlet red to suggest reflections off shiny gold and silver tubes. Shadows angling off to our left at the foot of each tube are created with hatched lines in raspberry red and peacock blue. The artist signed the work in pencil in the lower right corner, “Thiebaud 1988,” and wrote “OK T.P.” in the lower left.
