Biography

The second son of the 1st Marquess of Westminster and grandson of Sir Thomas Egerton, 1st Earl of Wilton, Thomas Grosvenor succeeded his grandfather as Earl of Wilton in 1814. He assumed the surname and arms of Egerton (in lieu of his original patronymic of Grosvenor) by Sign-Manual in 1821. That same year he married Lady Mary Margaret Stanley [d. 1858], daughter of the 12th Earl of Derby. They had two sons and two daughters, of whom sons Arthur Edward Holland Grey and Seymour John Grey became the 3rd and 4th Earls of Wilton in succession. Egerton married a second time in 1863 to Isabella, daughter and heiress of Major Elton Smith of the Madras Army.
