Knoedler & Co., New York), by October 1915; sold February 1917 to Adolph Lewisohn [c. 1849-1938], New York; by inheritance to his son, Sam A. Lewisohn [1884-1951]; bequest 1951 to NGA.

[1] James Inglis was the president of Cottier & Co. and it appears the company took possession of the painting after his death. It was included in the catalogue of what Elizabeth Broun (Albert Pinkham Ryder, Exh. cat., National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C., 1989) describes as an exhibition held 1-24 March 1910 at The Cottier Gallery (see the exhibition history). The catalogue describes the 24 paintings as "selected from the stock in their New York galleries", and indicates that Mending the Harness was purchased from the artist by Inglis. Walter P. Fearon, who was associated with Cottier Galleries until it disbanded in 1909, lent the painting to the 1912 inaugural exhibition at the Toledo (Ohio) Museum of Art.
