A sketch of the profile of a man on the far side of a tubular shape is at the center of this horizontal sheet. The man’s face is shaded to show the planes of his high cheekbones and full lips. He wears a floppy, brimmed hat. The space around him has a few lines to indicate a hill in the distance and the volume of the object behind which he is shown. Some strokes and dabs of ash-gray are along the bottom and right edges of the sheet.

A man with dark brown skin sits or reclines on the far side of a fallen, ash-white tree trunk in this horizontal watercolor painting. The trunk angles from just above the lower left corner of the sheet down and off the edge of the bottom right corner. The trunk is smooth with some fine cracks running along its length. Shorn roots flare out at the left end. The man sits near the roots so only his face and upper shoulders are visible as he looks to our right in profile. He has high, slightly hollow cheekbones and a prominent, pointed jaw. His upper lip is darker than the lower, and his mouth is closed. He wears a khaki-colored, floppy-brimmed hat and a high-collared white shirt. A hook affixed to the end of a tube, perhaps a prosthetic or tool, at the end of a long strap with a silver buckle is draped over the trunk. Grass and a few plants grow in the lower left corner of the composition, on our side of the tree, and a velvety, moss-green hill swells in the distance against the blank white sheet. We look sharply down onto the roofs of a house and barn in the deep distance, visible just over the edge of the tree near the lower right.

A hill slopes gently up and away from us, and is painted with a few streaks of white amid a field of earthy ash gray, fawn and rust brown, and muted olive green in this horizontal landscape painting. The horizon comes about two-thirds of the way up the composition, and the sky above lightens from smoky gray to our left to icy white to our right. Short, vertical brushstrokes along the bottom edge of the panel create the impression of scrubby ground cover. Between two splintered, worn posts near the lower right corner, snow has fallen in two lines that suggest former wagon tracks that quickly even out, though they reemerge, also lined with snow, near the crest of this low hill. More snow is sparsely scattered across the rise of the hill. A second hill, slightly darker in color, rises to our right. Even farther away, another hill is covered in snow. The artist signed the work in black paint in the lower left corner: “Andrew Wyeth.”

A landscape seen through sheer lace curtains that billow in toward us from an open window nearly fills this horizontal painting. The window is angled slightly downward as it extends off the right side of the composition, so it does not line up with the edges of the rectangular painting. The narrow strip of dove-gray wall to the left of the window casement is cracked near the simple, deep gray molding that surrounds the window. Slivers of light peek through rips in the dark shade that covers upper third of the window. The right curtain panel surges toward us as the left panel flutters lightly off to our side. The inner edges are trimmed with subtle lace birds and flowers. The window looks down onto an expanse of olive-green grass and dark green trees line the far edge of the field. Tire tracks cross the field from near the lower left corner of the painting to our left, and into the distance to meet a sliver of white, perhaps a body of water.
