Sculpture and Sketching: From Traditional to Modern

Together, we’ll investigate the materials, techniques, subject matter, and artistic intent behind both traditional and modern sculptures. During this two-building tour, we’ll consider figurative bronzes, marble carvings, and works that challenge the conventional definition of a sculpture. The tour will include four or five stops and sketching activities tailored to connect with your students’ grade level.

Looking and Learning Skills

This field trip encourages participants to develop their ideas and interpretations based on careful observation, sketching, and discussion of sculpture at five to six stops. Students will practice:

  • Use sketching as a tool to observe and understand sculptural technique, form, and function
  • Debate, discuss, and interpret the intended purpose and message behind sculptures
  • Compare and contrast the materials, technique, and subject matter of sculptures

  • Important Scheduling Information

    Field trips must be scheduled at least four weeks in advance. Groups must contain at least 15 students.

  • Bus Transportation

    Bus transportation is available for DCPS (District of Columbia Public Schools) participating in our docent-led school field trips. Teachers should follow the guidelines to apply for bus transportation.

Examples of Works Featured on this Field Trip

A winged woman has hoisted a young, muscular man up and across one shoulder in this freestanding bronze statue. In this view, the woman runs toward us, her back foot lifted, as she wraps her arms around the man’s thighs. She looks off to our left, her hair swept up. Long, narrow wings slice into the space behind her. Her chest and shoulders are covered with gold armor, and drapery swirls around her legs. The man is nearly nude, covered only with a cloth across his groin. His arms are flung wide, one reaching high in the air and the other holding a broken sword by the woman’s shoulder. His head lolls to one side, his lips parted. A laurel branch lies at the woman’s foot on a small mound textured like a rock. An inscription on the front rim of the base reads “GLORIA VICTIS.”

We look down onto nine gray stone domes that melt into each other in the space of a patio enclosed with a pink marble wall opposite floor-to-ceiling windows. Each dome is nearly as tall as the ceiling over the windows, and each is made of stacked pieces of slate. At the top center of each dome is a collar of gray slate to create a pupil-like opening. The stone collar creating the openings is lighter gray around the ink-black centers, which are the shaded interiors of the domes. The domes meld and stack like a handful of bubbles.

The top section of this abstract sculpture is made up of a vertical, elongated form cast in gleaming brass that swells gently at the center and tapers to a point at either end. Near the bottom point, the form flares out slightly to make a tall, conical foot. This sits atop a short, cylindrical, white limestone base on a wood pedestal. The pedestal is carved to look like a disc at the center flanked above and below by semicircles with the flat edges facing up and down. The sculpture is photographed against a pale gray background.

Six black, wedgelike shapes, one dark blue arrowhead shape, and six red triangular shapes with rounded corners are connected with thin rods to form this abstract sculpture. In this photograph, we look up at the piece to where it hangs from the glass ceiling of a light-filled interior space with marble walls. The paddle-like shapes are attached to the end of the curved rods, which are linked together like branches. In our view, the black arm curves up across the top of the picture and the red arm curves down into the lower right corner, and to our left. Each red paddle is smaller as they move from the central armature to the end of the branch.

This painting shows a canyon landscape viewed from a high vantage point, with ridges and formations extending into the distance. The horizon is positioned high in the painting, with the light-blue sky featuring soft white clouds. The canyon displays vibrant shades of red, pink, and green, contrasting with shadowed areas in darker shades of blue and gray. In the bottom right corner of the painting, there are some geometric white and blue patterns overlayed on top of the canyon.

This piece shows a colorful house resembling a three-dimensional architectural sketch that has been created with intricate, thin, multicolored lines against white paper. The roof of the house is pointed and covered in curved shingles, while the walls of the house appear to be brick. The thin lines creating the image are an array of bright colors including neon green, vivid blue, bright yellow, magenta, and purple. In some areas, the lines overlap, creating darker shades. Beyond the edges of this house, the thin lines continue outward in curves and loops.

A close-up view of a deep plum-purple jack-in-the-pulpit flower surrounded by emerald-green leaves fills this vertical painting. The flower is narrow at its base, where it is striped with white and pale lilac purple, and it flares open like a trumpet in the top half of this composition. The unfurled petal is streaked with wavy white and magenta-pink veins around a deep purple tube-like stalk emerging from inside the base. Leaves in spring and kelly green billow up around the base of the flower along the bottom of the canvas, and more leaves surround the top of the flower. The area behind the pointed, curling tip of the flower glows with a lemon-lime yellow. The space around the flower and bewteen the green leaves is mauve pink.
